Crispy Tofu

Being a Gluten Free Vegan, Tofu is my main go to food options for Protein and is something to mix it up when I don't want just a meal of Veggies. Saying that, Tofu can be pretty bland and boring if cooked badly. I've been experimenting a lot more with ways of cooking it recently. I've soaked it in BBQ Sauce before frying it, added GF Soy Sauce while frying it and I've even tried baking it in the oven. With pretty mixed results, the baked Tofu was definitely the worst.

Recently though, I have been working with different recipes to find a more exciting way to cook Tofu. I have experimented mostly with trying to make the Tofu crispy, which I am glad to say I have had success with! So I'd like to share it with you. It is super simple and may seem like I'm teaching you the alphabet, but to some it will change their way of thinking towards cooking Tofu. I know it has for me!

Ingredients: (single portion)

1/3 block of Tofu, cut into cubes of any size you'd like

Cornflour

2 Pinches of Salt

1 Pinch of Pepper

2 tbsp Vegetable Oil

Method:

1: Cut up the Tofu, I always put it between sheets of Kitchen Roll and press it to be a little drier. For this recipe it shouldn't be too pressed as the Cornflour won't stick properly and the inside should be much softer than the outside.

2: Grab a bowl, pour in a decent amount of Cornflour (approx 3 tbsp should be enough) and mix it with the Salt & Pepper.

3. Pop the Tofu into the Cornflour bowl, and move the Tofu around until it is fully coated. I find a small spoon and some movement is enough to do it.

4. Put a Frying Pan on a medium heat with the Vegetable Oil. When it is heated properly, put in the Tofu. Let it sit there for about 2 minutes first before you move it, allowing the Tofu to cook on one side

properly first.

5: Turn the Tofu so it browns on each side nicely, you will notice that it will start to feel hard on the outside, but don't worry the inside will remain softly cooked!

6: Cook it until each side is golden brown, should take about 6-8 minutes depending on the size of Tofu you cut.

7: Serve with your favourite accompaniment and enjoy the crispiness! It brings me back to the days of Chinese Takeaways!
