ASDA Fajita Kit

I find myself in Asda at least once every 2 weeks. I usually work my way around the Supermarkets because they have so many different items to offer. One week, I'm heading to Asda for their wide range and choice, the next I'll be heading to Tesco for their longer life bread and bagels. I happened to find myself in Asda a couple of weeks ago, topping up our stock of food in the house and happened upon a new product.

A Free From Fajita Kit, of course going up to it, with it only saying Gluten Free I didn't have high hopes. So often I find the Supermarkets cater quite a bit to Gluten Free only, with the now exception of Tesco. I was pleasantly surprised and of course, when I can have something I find it very hard to not buy it. I ended up getting it, after all it's been years since I had made proper Fajitas so it was about time!

Here is my humble opinion on the Asda Free From Home Fajita kit...

Availability:

All of the Asda's I have been to since the discovery have had this kit available. Of course, the make is Asda Free From so that does somewhat limit the amount of places you will be able to get them. If you're like me though, Asda have such a wide Free From range with brilliantly low prices on fruit and veg that you'll be visiting them often anyway!

(Not going to score)

Ease of Cooking:

The kit comes with everything you need to make tasty Fajitas, just minus the fresh parts which allows you to then choose what you want. It recommends Chicken, of course I wasn't having that and I used Tofu.

All you need to do is make the Tofu in a way that you enjoy, add the Onions and Bell Peppers to a frying pan until golden. As long as you can do that, it's as hard as it gets. Once combined with the Tofu in the frying pan add as much of the seasoning as you like. I didn't add too much because I'm a bit of a scaredy cat when it comes to Spice. Plus I found that about a third was enough for a single serving.

The Tortilla Wraps just need freshening up with a little water in the Microwave for up to 30 seconds, it just makes them softer and easier to make a wrap out of.

The pack contains 6 Tortilla Wraps, a packet of seasoning and 2 packets of Salsa. Great for a couple of people or they last in a sealed bag for a few days. It was all super easy to prepare and felt like back in the day when my Mum used to make us Fajitas! A great kit for people who are relatively new to cooking or wanting something nice and simple to make after a long day.

Taste:

For a packet mix, I wasn't expecting too much if I'm honest. The wraps looked pretty good, different from the wraps available in separate packets. They look so much like the real thing that you get with the Old El Paso Fajita Kits.

The wraps are of a strange texture, slightly rubbery on the outside and then slightly dry on the inside. Nothing special but they held together well. The only issue I had was that the Salsa made the mix pretty wet and the Tortilla wraps didn't hold up too well with that. If you like trying to keep the wrap in your hand with sauce dripping down all over you, then ignore that. For me, I like to eat a little more neatly, with the exception of a Mooshies Burger. (See my review if you don't know what it is.) All in all, the wraps were ok, just not amazing which is what I'd expect from a Fajita kit anyway.

The Flavour mix is slightly spicy and adds a good level of kick to the cooked mixture. It combined well and was just the level of spice that I enjoy, it just could have done with a bit more seasoning. That would be my bad though so I won't call that on Asda.

The Salsa was alright, it tasted more like plain chopped tomatoes. It didn't seem like it had anything else in it. To me Salsa should be served freshly prepared with Red Onions, some Coriander and a twist of lemon. They would have been better off leaving it out of the kit. Saying that, I did use both packets as I don't like to waste and it did add a much needed bit of moisture to the Fajita.

I added Rice and sliced Avocado, it was the perfect combination with the Tofu, Onion and Bell Peppers in a wrap. In all honesty, this could quite easily have been replicated without the kit and to a better standard. Overall though, I did enjoy the wraps I had as it was a nice change from my meal rotation plus now I know I can make them myself.

If you're looking for something quick, easy and a new meal in the rotation then this is great. Beginner cooks, or those new to being Gluten Free, will find a helpful kit for learning new meals and easing into a new diet.

For me, I think that it is a decent price for what you get, considering that a normal pack of Gluten Free Wraps are about the same price for less contents. Just the parts altogether don't blow me away whilst I also have recipes to recreate meals like this in a more homemade fresh and tastier way.
